That’s What She Said

That’s What She Said is a comedy interview show with a casual, conversational feel. Each week, Emily Sumlin chats with female comedians, including Chelsea Peretti, Sherry Cola, and Amber Riley, about their accomplishments and experiences in the industry.

I art directed the relaunch of the show as That’s What She Said, as it expanded from a special on the She’s So Funny channel to a weekly show. I worked with Emily to understand the goals of the rebrand and listened to the first episode of the show to create art that appealed to a younger audience, conveyed the casual “girl’s chat” feel of the show, and differentiated itself from the rest of the comedy content on SiriusXM.

The result was cover art and a scalable episode template that could be updated weekly as new episodes aired. The team also uses this key art as a starting point for their social media posts.

My Role

Art Direction, Design

Much of the art for comedy shows revolves around microphones and stages. I explored designs that strayed away from microphones and typical comedy imagery, but ultimately, we felt it lacked the comedy context. I pitched the idea of creating collage-inspired art, where we could incorporate comedy imagery and give the immediate comedy context but in a modern and unexpected way. I layered in texture and grain to lean into the casual feel of the show.

Behind the Design

I created a scalable episode template that is refreshed with guest imagery each week as new episodes air. This keeps the show page fresh and also allowed the show to be promoted in a set on the SiriusXM app for Women’s History Month.
